2009 proved to be another fantastic year for film. From action and suspense with movies like "District 9" and "The Hurt Locker", to dramas like "Precious" that stole our hearts and made us question the way we view and judge others in our society. So without further ado, here's a list of the top 5 movies that came out in 2009.
Inglorious Bastards
It's been some time since Tarantino came out with a film that has grabbed as much attention as "Inglorious Bastards". Some are calling this his best work yet. The story takes place in Nazi-occupied France, and revolves around a group of allied soldiers called The Bastards. The group, lead by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), is in the business one thing and one thing only, killing Nazis. This one will go down as one of Tarantino's best, and there are already rumors circulating of a sequel.
District 9
Newcomer director Neil Blomkamp takes us on a fascinating and thrilling ride into a world where aliens and humans coexist. The story takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa, where in 1982 a large alien mother ship arrives out of the blue hovering over the city. This movie has awesome special effects that should only be viewed in HD. As the story unfolds we find out more about the aliens, why they're here, and how to coexist with them. Out of fear, the aliens are confined to a government camp inside Johannesburg called District 9. The camp is secured with a massive police presence, and it soon turns into a slum. District 9 is inspired by historical events that took place in South Africa during the apartheid era.
The Hurt Locker
This beautiful film directed by Kathryn Bigelow will help change the way we view war films forever. The film revolves around the talented Sgt. First Class William James who takes command of a U.S. Military bomb squad after the previous commander was killed by a roadside bomb. This is an edge of your seat suspense thriller, which makes us look into the ugly realities of war. This kind of suspense and action should only be seen in high definition.
This is the heart-wrenching story of a severely overweight 16 year-old African American girl named Precious, and follows her life growing up on the mean streets of Harlem, New York City. Precious grew up in an abused household, where she was repeatedly raped by her father while her mother turned a blind eye to what was really going on. As a result she has two children with from her father. She eventually finds help from a teacher at her high school and fights to raise her two children on her own.
Where the Wild Things Are
Spike Jonze's adaptation of the classic children's book was arguably one of the most intriguing and interesting films of 2009. With fantastic visual effects, this classic children's book was finally brought to life on the big screen. This is the story of Max, with a struggling single Mom, and a sister that does not like him very much. When Max's mother brings home a new boyfriend over for dinner, the pressures of his situation become too much, and he storms off into the woods. Max's imagination quickly takes over, and we are brought into his creative world of monsters and fantasy. Max creates this imaginative world to help fill the void of his frustrating home life and lack of attention.
